I believe that the topic I have chosen is pretty broad but is manageable. To make the reader understand the concept fully I have to cover the topic as a whole going over everything I possibly can. The goal for my research paper is going to be telling the reader both sides of the story, not just the negative. So to accomplish this I have to explain the negative and the positive points of the subject.In the end I believe that I don't have to narrow my research topic any but I just have to do a lot of explaining so nothing about this subject is left out.

While doing a general exploration of my topic I found a few interesting facts about marijuana. I found out on http://www.amsa.org/resource/natlinit/marijuana.cfm that marijuana contains over 400 chemicals and is both a stimulant and also a depressant.On http://wiki.idebate.org/index.php/Debate:_Medical_marijuana#HIV.2FAIDS:_Is_marijuana_good_for_treating_HIV.2FAIDS.3F I I found that one joint will do as much damage to the lungs as a pack of cigarettes.I also found out on http://www.erowid.org/plants/cannabis/cannabis_law.shtml that pot is classified as a hallucinogen and is illegal to give,grow sell or buy.

All in all most of the text I found was more negative for the plant and its uses than the positive aspects. I found that many of the websites I looked at were biased and only told of the negative aspects and mentioned nothing of the benefits of the drug. The most unbiased website I found that seemed to have a lot of positive information on pot was http://www.norml.org. I will use this website as one of the sites to find good credible positive information on pot also known as cannabis sativa.

The topic I have chosen to do my argumentative paper on this semester is going to be the legalization of Marijuana for both medical and public use. The reason this subject was chosen is that I am going to get my degree in criminal justice and whats more fitting than a topic such as this. I also have some what of an opinion on the subject due to my use of Marijuana in the my high school days. I don't want to have a biased opinion on this subject because I want to be a well rounded person and base my beliefs on facts and not opinions.
I honestly don't have much knowledge in this subject besides the fact that I have had previously experimented in the use of Marijuana in high school. I have heard a few rumors that the reason that this infamous drug is illegal is due to the fact that "The Man"(Uncle Sam), can't tax this product because it is so hard to regulate. I know a little bit of information on the legal Marijuana that is prescribed by doctors to those with terminal illnesses. A cohort of mine, his mother has been prescribed marijuana due to the fact that she has a illness that the THC can help with. Also a deceased aunt of mine had also been prescribed Marijuana to help her gain her appetite back when she was in her last months of life and couldn't keep her food down. I also know some of the regulations and laws that the patients have to follow in order to keep their legal Marijuana license.
There are many topics about this subject that I don't know about. This is exactly why I have picked it for my paper this semester. I want to learn the reasoning behind the illegalization of pot and the laws that go behind keeping this drug illegal. I also want to learn about the long term and short term effects it has on the mind and body. Some other things I want to learn about is some positive points about the drug,if there are any. Its just that growing up I have only heard the negative about Marijuana and I know there has to be some good to it. I mean if cigarettes and alcohol can be legalized and they have mental and physical effects then why can't we think about legalizing Marijuana.

RJA #2a: Possible Topics

I had many ideas on what I wanted to write about this semester. As a student studying to get my degree in criminal justice I had thought of a few subjects in that specific field of study. Subjects that first had come to mind were subjects such as illegal immigration, capital punishment,the treatment of inmates in federal and state prisons, and the reliability of lie detectors and DNA used as evidence in the court systems. With this said the subject that really has gotten my full attention is the idea of legalizing marijuana for medical and public use. This topic has interested me throughout high school and still has my attention to this day.
I know that most people look down on a subject such as this, but as a student trying to receive my bachelors degree in criminal justice I would like to know more about the views and opinions on this topic. I don't know much about this topic and I'm on the fence about if this infamous drug should be legalized for public use. I have somewhat of an opinion on the subject at hand but with much research I believe that I will be able to understand both sides of the argument. I want to know more about the legalization part but what interests me more is the question "Why?" isn't this drug legal besides that it is unhealthy. Well with this said I wish to expand my knowledge so I can better understand what drives people to have positive or negative opinions on marijuana.

RJA #1: Areas of Academic Interest

My academic interests include a wide variety of topics from the medieval time period and Charlemagne to modern topics such as children that are affected with ADHD. My interest in children with ADHD came from the fact that as a child in school I was diagnosed with the disorder.With this said, I am interested because of the prevalent affects it had on my schooling in my early years and how I came to cope and overcome the disorder to live a productive lifestyle. As a man living with this disorder, I still manage to go to school full time and I am a supervisor at a Fortune 500 company with no special needs help what so ever . As a child I didn't know much about the disorder due to the fact of my age and the lack of information that was given to me. While in college here at Red Rocks, I took a psychology course where I had a chance to really study this disorder which affects 1 out of every 4 school children. This really opened my eyes to all of the hurdles that I as a man with the disorder have to overcome on an everyday basis. With the information I attained during the psychology class I have learned a few tips and tricks to help me through everyday life.

My other intrests are ancient Egypt, which I havent taken any classes to study this time period in history. I am currently enrolled in a Humanities class here at Red Rocks which should help me learn a little bit more about this topic. My big interest about the ancient Egyptians is in there burial practices and there magnificent monuments. I just find it soo intresting that this civilization had technology beyond their years and were able to use it to their advantage to rise above other civilizations of the time period.

I am also intrested in many social and political topics that are in todays media. I don't really know much due to the fact that I haven't gotten to research the topics. Eventhough I haven't studied some of the topics such as natioanl healthcare,I do have an opinion on some of the information I have heard from the news and cohorts.Another topic in this genre that really gets my blood going is the topic of illegal immigration. What has gotten my attention most about this subject is the fact that I know some people that have family members that are here illegally.
